May The Words Of My Mouth

I don’t know what it is about certain forms of social media, but they seem at times to bring out the worst in people. The promise of the internet age was that it would bring individuals together and promote understanding. Sadly, it seems to bring division, confusion, and plenty of misunderstanding.

Like many people today, I have an account on various different social media platforms. I’m struggling with the way some people interact with others over issues of the day – issues that are often complex and nuanced. I am saddened and often shocked at what some individuals, Christians and others, will write in an online message. It is doubtful that they would say such things in person. You certainly don’t find many Christian virtues expressed in some of the exchanges.

Lately, Psalm 19:14 has been popping up in various newsfeeds. As usual, the scriptures have a good way of correcting us.

May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

This is good advice, whether we are writing online or talking in person. The problem isn’t the choice of media used: it’s the condition of our heart. Our words can reveal what is happening deep down inside. When we start mediating on the wrong things, the wrong words come out.

So be kind to others out there on the internet. Remember that you might be revealing more about yourself than you intended.
